"Thirty-one lengths. Nobody has explained it. Nobody needs to."

# Secretariat The greatest racehorse that ever lived. In 1973 he won the Triple Crown with performances that have never been matched. His Belmont Stakes victory — thirty-one lengths, 2:24 flat — remains the fastest mile and a half in American racing history, a record that has stood for over fifty years. Jockey Ron Turcotte said he was simply watching, that there was nothing left to do. Secretariat's heart, discovered at necropsy, was estimated at twice the normal size for a horse. Science has never explained it either.
