Luna

"Fourteen years on her corner of the couch, and not one of them wasted"

Luna showed up at the Lakewood shelter as a kitten with no backstory, just a pair of enormous green eyes and an attitude that suggested she was doing you a favor by existing. The Martinez family adopted her in 2010, and she immediately claimed the left corner of the living room couch as her sovereign territory. She held that post for 14 years. She tolerated the dog — barely — with the kind of regal indifference that made it clear who actually ran the household. She loved tuna but would never come when you opened the can. She’d appear two minutes later, sitting by her bowl, as if she’d been there all along and you were late. She purred like a diesel engine when she thought no one was listening. She slept in a sunbeam every afternoon and judged you for not doing the same. The couch corner is still there, and nobody sits in it.
