James Paul Van Der Beek

1977-03-082024-12-18
"He carried a generation's nostalgia — and wore it with quiet grace."

James Van Der Beek was an American actor who became a defining face of late-1990s television as Dawson Leery in the landmark WB drama Dawson's Creek. The show ran from 1998 to 2003 and shaped the cultural vocabulary of an entire generation of young adults who grew up debating Dawson versus Pacey and hearing the opening notes of Paula Cole. Born in Cheshire, Connecticut, Van Der Beek studied at Drew University and began his career in theater before television came calling. He was 19 years old when he was cast as Dawson — an earnest, film-obsessed teenager navigating adolescence in a small Massachusetts town. The show made him a star, and he wore that fame with a thoughtful self-awareness that set him apart. In the years that followed, he worked steadily across film and television, deliberately choosing unexpected roles that challenged the teen idol image. He appeared in the comedy Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23 as a satirical version of himself, earning new fans and critical appreciation for his willingness to be in on the joke. He was warm, accessible, and genuinely funny. In his final years, he was open about his diagnosis with colorectal cancer, sharing his experience publicly to raise awareness. He died on December 18, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was 47. He leaves behind a wife, six children, and a body of work that will resonate for decades.
