"He waited nine years. Loyalty does not consult a calendar."

# Hachiko An Akita dog born in rural Japan in 1923, Hachiko was the companion of Professor Hidesaburo Ueno of Tokyo Imperial University. Every day he walked his owner to Shibuya Station and waited for him to return. In May 1925, Ueno died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage at work and never came home. Hachiko returned to Shibuya Station every day for the next nine years, nine months, and fifteen days, until his own death in 1935. A bronze statue of Hachiko stands at Shibuya Station today and is one of the most visited sites in Tokyo.
