"Her voice sang us through sorrow"

Dorothy Mae Ellis was a choir director and seamstress from Birmingham, Alabama, whose alto voice lifted spirits at Mount Zion Baptist Church for over 50 years. Born into a family of sharecroppers, she found solace in music as a child and turned it into a lifelong calling, teaching hymns to children and leading the choir through countless Sundays. Dorothy had hands that could stitch a wedding dress as easily as they could direct a harmony. Her home was always filled with the hum of her sewing machine or the sound of gospel records, and she’d mend clothes for anyone in need while offering a listening ear. Her choir performances during civil rights rallies in the 1960s were unforgettable, her voice a beacon of hope in turbulent times. Family gatherings weren’t complete without her leading everyone in song, her laughter as infectious as her melodies. She passed on Christmas Day at 83, surrounded by her loved ones, after a long battle with heart disease. Her funeral was a celebration of song, with the choir she nurtured singing her into eternity. Her old hymn book, worn and annotated, remains a family heirloom, carrying her spirit in every note.
