Captain Featherbeard
"Our pirate parrot, squawking through our memories"
Captain Featherbeard, or just Captain, was a vibrant African Grey Parrot who was the loudest member of our family in Seattle, Washington, for 15 years. With his shimmering gray feathers and bright red tail, he was a character from the start, mimicking everything from phone ringtones to my husband’s sneezes with uncanny accuracy. He’d perch on your shoulder like a true pirate’s mate, demanding head scratches and chattering nonsense words he’d invented, ruling our home with a sassy squawk. Losing Captain to old age felt like the house lost its voice. There’s no more ‘Hello, matey!’ when I walk in, no more laughter when he’d mimic the dog’s bark just to confuse him. His empty cage is a painful void, though we’ve left his favorite bell toy hanging there, as if he might fly back. We held a small ceremony by the lake he loved watching from the window, letting his spirit soar with the wind, forever our feathered pirate.
