The First Engineer in the Family

Mateo Alvarez crossed the graduation stage with an electrical engineering degree, a crooked cap, and a family section loud enough to be heard from several counties away. His mother cried before his name was called. His father claimed he had something in his eye, which fooled nobody. Mateo had taken the long route: community college, night shifts at a warehouse, tutoring sessions between bus rides, and more than one semester where quitting would have been understandable. He did not quit. He kept showing up, one lab, one exam, one half-broken prototype at a time. After the ceremony, his younger cousins asked if he could build a robot for them now. Mateo said probably, but only after a nap. The degree is more than paper. It is proof that persistence can become a family inheritance.
