Oscar Wilde
1854-10-16 — 1900-11-30
"He said the unsayable so beautifully that even his enemies quoted him."
# Oscar Wilde
Irish poet, playwright, and wit. The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Earnest, and a body of aphorisms so precisely aimed they still draw blood. He was the most famous writer in London at his peak, brought low by a libel case he initiated and lost catastrophically, imprisoned for two years for gross indecency, and died in Paris three years after his release, broke and largely abandoned. He is quoted more than almost any writer in the English language. He died saying the wallpaper was killing him.
