Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi transformed the concept of resistance, proving that nonviolent civil disobedience could topple colonial rule. Over decades of salt marches, fasts, and patient organizing, he led India toward independence while teaching the world a new grammar of protest. His philosophy of satyagraha — truth-force — would go on to inspire freedom movements from Birmingham to Soweto. He died as he had lived: in service to something larger than himself.
