Carlos Ray "Chuck" Norris
1940-03-10 — 2026-03-19
"He didn't walk through fire. Fire moved."
Carlos Ray Norris was born on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma — the son of a mechanic and a devout mother who raised three boys largely on her own. He was quiet, self-doubting, and unremarkable by his own admission. Then the Air Force sent him to South Korea, and everything changed.
He discovered Tang Soo Do and returned home a different man. He opened a chain of martial arts schools, trained alongside Steve McQueen and Bruce Lee, and didn't so much enter Hollywood as kick through it. Missing in Action. Code of Silence. Walker, Texas Ranger. For three decades, Chuck Norris was American cinema's gold standard for the quiet man who gets the job done.
His credentials were real, not manufactured. He became the first Westerner in history to be awarded an 8th-degree black belt in tae kwon do. He holds 8th-degree black belts in Tang Soo Do and Brazilian jiu-jitsu and founded his own system, Chun Kuk Do. The stunts, the roundhouse kicks, the bone-dry calm in the face of overwhelming odds — none of it was an act.
Off screen he was equally unyielding: a philanthropist who co-founded KickStart Kids to bring martial arts into public schools, a tireless advocate for veterans, and a man who took his faith seriously in an industry that rewards the opposite.
The internet made him a myth — thousands of "Chuck Norris facts" declaring him immune to aging, physics, and death itself. He found it funny. That warmth and self-deprecation, hidden under all that granite, was the real secret.
He passed away on March 19, 2026, in Kauai, Hawaii, surrounded by family. He was 86. The legend, it turns out, was very real.
